"Canada Reads" Finalist
The Outlander by Gil Adamson was a "Canada Reads" finalist last year. The way they choose the book for all Canada to read is unique from other "community reads." Five personalities from Canada are chosen to champion their choice to the whole country.
I just finished reading this first novel by Gil Adamson and would like to champion it for all our area reading groups. Nineteen year old Mary Boulton murdered her husband and is on the run from her two brother-in-laws. The time is around 1903 in Alberta, Canada. Where does a woman run and how does she exist without skills in that wilderness, at a time when a woman's place was in the home? The people she meets and the places she goes are what make for interesting reading in this fast-paced novel of a woman on the run. Little by little her murderous story is revealed as the novel progresses to its final climax. I couldn't put the book down. However, I have to confess I was as fascinated or maybe even more fascinated by the trip itself rather than the ending. Adamson's descriptions transport you beautifully to a different place. This book is a real attention getter.
